Problem with PC gaming -- too many titles?

Back in the day, EVERYONE was waiting for Quake 2, Quake 3, StarCraft, WarCraft 2, etc etc.

The major studios only released one or two games a year, and TONS of people played them. Online gameplay was awesome because there were thousands of players and you never had to wait for a full server.

Now it seems that there are hundreds of crap games -- every action movie has a "game" that comes out for it.

Maybe we are too diluted? Would gaming be better if gamers and publishers focused on a smaller number of HQ titles?

Or am I just getting old and jaded?

Well, if you, as a consumer, buy only the smaller number of HQ titles, then we wouldn't have a problem, would we? ;)

Well, personally, I only buy a few titles a year. The last games I bought were BF2, then Quake4, then Star Wars Empire at War.

So I don't think I am the problem .. :p

No, you're right. Falcon 3 used to be the flight sim to have. Then for a while it moved to Fighters Anthology. Falcon 4 lasted for a little while but then everything spread out and died.

Man.. Falcon 3... that game was out when? Early 90s or something? hehe.. my comp couldn't run it back then.

Edit: lol 1991.. I was 10 yrs old. I didn't get my first comp till I was 12... it was a Mac... that's why it didn't run I guess.

what do you expect when half the games released are by EA and they just churn them out 1 right after another. no quality control whatsoever.

too busy trying to make a quick buck they can't be arsed to test their stuff. get it out quick and let the players test it then patch it later, if they even do that. and then even the patches are full of bugs.

its companies like EA that are ruining gaming.

Dreamfall isn't a game. The puzzles and combat are so simple that they might as well not exist. Your task is to walk around and unravel the story. Not that I'm saying I didn't like it, but people should be aware of what it is.

One word: Oblivion

I actually like that there are a lot of games, but boy do I remember how much I looked forward to playing Quake 2 and Doom 3.. those were the days that gaming today was built on!

But companies like Ubisoft do churn out some quality releases, id and Blizzard are no slouches either. I simply just don't buy/play EA games on the PC, sports games were ment for consoles anyway and that seems to be all EA is good at.

As small a company as ID software is, I'm happy to see that they can still compete with the corporate giants like EA. And on top of it, they port their games to linux :) Anyway, I think what PC gaming needs is some original ideas, instead of the same rehashed titles.

Yep. I really liked it but to be honest most gamers wouldn't. It's more akin to a book than a game.

EA is the worst thing that ever happened to PC gaming.

My only problem with the PC gaming industry is the lack of new updated realistic FPS, like what Ghost Recon was, and a new realistic military flight sim (not this arcade crap or star wars fighter garbage), something like Jane's USAF, Longbow, or Falcon.

I have 1 game installed on my PC, WoW, and I cancelled my acct. My PC can't play any of the latest games and I don't wanna spend any money on upgrading to a better PC. I'm done w/ PC gaming.

Sounds like a Japanese Doushin game.

i think playstation has at least as many sh!tty 'me too' titles as the PC does.

not quite as few blockbuster games come out for PC however, and many of the ones that do, nowadays are on consoles as well.

but perhaps the biggest problem is that the most popular game on the PC is counterstrike, which people play over and over and over and over and over and over and over again, etc. they don't upgrade to the newest shooters, except maybe CSS. used to be you couldn't play a game over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

flight sims, which used to be a big PC gaming staple, have almost died out. they would have been awesome for multiplayer gaming. bomber raid with P51s and Bf-109s and a fleet of B17s would kick ass.

Hah I was just playing Ghost Recon this afternoon. That game is so good. I saw there's some Advanced Warfighter sequel out but I have no idea what the reviews are like.

To give you an idea of how slowly I go through games, I have an unused copy of Longbow 2 sitting next to my computer (pulled it out of the closet). Yes, I bought it new when it came out. In 1999. I haven't played it yet. I think I may this week or next week.

Have you tried that new Falcon release? Some company bought the code rights and integrated all the good mods that are around. It's only $30 or so and is supposed to be fantastic. I have the old binder version and I've been meaning to give SP4 a whirl one of these days.

Did you ever play Jane's Fighters Anthology on the Combat Room or whatever the hell their online gaming thing was called? It was fantastic. One part of the game that had so much promise (it's basically what massive online gaming is like right now) but wasn't played much at the time was "airbase assault" mode. It was 2 to ~8 players, and each player was assigned an airbase. You got to pick a lineup of ~10 planes that you would get in order as you died and respawned. With these planes you had to both defend your base from everyone else, and attack the other bases. And besides that you could easily land to refuel and rearm in an instant. I remember so many last-ditch F-111F full afterburner runs toward the last enemy base trying to make it there before that dude blew up my base. Ah, the good times. I just got rid of my copy of Fighters Anthology a couple months ago. Now I wanna play it again lol. :(

Yeah, janes.combat.net. It was so much fun, then one day I go to play it, and the message of horror came up. "These services are no longer offered with game." :(

I wouldnt say that.

some people only stick to specific genres, so its good for them to get some variety.

Ah, yes. You ever fly against Kalashnikov on there? I knew him on the AOL ladder, but I know he played on Combat.net at least a little bit. Damn that guy was good. I later found out his main advantage came from flying with almost no fuel at all, but he was still flawless on combat air tactics.
