I recently put a system together with:
ASUS P5AD2 mobo
P4 3.4
ATI X800XT PCI express
74GB Raptor HD
1GB Corsair RAM
When I first put the system together about 3 months ago, I noticed that my PSU had a 20 pin connector and the mobo wanted a 24 pin connector. The mobo manual says, "When using an ATX 12 V PSU with a 20-pin power plug, make sure that it can provide at least 15 A on the +12 V lead, and a minimum power of 350 W.Use of an ATX 12 V PSU with a 20-pin power plug is not recommended." According to my PSU manual (Antec True Blue 480W), the +12V lead provides a max load of 22A, so I went ahead and put the sytem together.
I installed Doom3 and Half-Life 2 right away, and was not impressed with the performance... lots of stutters, and I couldn't run on max settings. I thought I should be able to max things out with my X800XT.
The problem I am having now is that when I do things that are CPU intensive... such as unraring, burning DVDs, and virus scanning, the computer will crash. It takes about 10 minutes before I can reboot. If I try to reboot earlier, I can hear the HD spinning at a slow speed, and it crashes before the mobo can post. After 10 mins, when it does boot, the HD speeds up right before the mobo posts.
I have the ASUS monitor software installed to watch the temps, and the CPU temp is always borderline hot. CPU stays around 75 degrees C when idle. Mobo is always cool.
Does this sound like a PSU problem? Cooling problem? I have seen 20 to 24 pin adapters. Would this help? Should I get a new PSU? Should I RMA the mobo?
