friend was building his new computer, and had everything setup. he turned on the power, and it booted up, but it detected his 1800+ as a 1500+, so he changed the 1500+ to 1800+ in the bios. also, it didn't detect his hard drive, and dvd, it kept detecting it as weird stuff. he turned it on and off a couple times, but he turned it on one more time and this time there was no video. it sounded like the computer was booting up, but no video. he tried changing monitors and video cards, but it still didn't work. i'm thinking that maybe the hsf wasn't on tight enough, but it did look pretty secure and screwed in all the way. anyone else have any ideas?

Try taking everthing out but the ram, video card and cpu and see if it posts. Also if he has more than one stick of ram, you might try taking one stick out and then swaping the sticks. It is also possible that the heatsink was not on properly and the cpu was destoyed. If you have another working system you could swap the parts one at a time to test them.

ok it doesn't seem to be the processor, checked on it and no burn marks or anything. i'll have him try taking out everything but the vid card, cpu, and ram. see what happens.

I have a pentium133 rig that when I turn it on, I get no signal.... instead a series of long consistant beeeeps that keep going until I turn the system off.

Computers can be such a pain when they don't start...

The best thing to do would be to test out each component and isolate what is wrong
