Hi, i am trying to setup the following specs: abit kn8 sli, 3800x2, seasonic torando 400, crucial 512, x1600pro, seagate 120gb, nec 2510a. When i turn it on, i hear the fan spin fast, then after i hear the one beep the fan starts to spin at a lower rpm and its stuck at a screen where it says press "tab for post" and press "del for setup". It is just stuck on that screen.

Does anyone know whats the problem. If i hear that one beep then i assume that no hardware should be defective right?

your help is much appreciated. Thank you!

And what happens when you press tab or delete? Does it show any messages regarding detected drives?

A single beep means that the mainboard's devices worked, and any PCI/AGP/PCIe devices at least were detected and didn't freeze the POST process. It may not have detected any IDE/SATA drives, or may simply be bitching because the CMOS clock isn't set.

First easy step, reset the CMOS if you haven't already. Even if you didn't get a chance to go in and change anything, it might still need resetting. Also simply double-check any jumpers.

Next step to troubleshoot any bootup problems: remove everything that isn't essential, meaning leave the memory and CPU plugged in and boot. In this case, since you know the system will at least POST to the first beep, you can assume the mainboard and CPU are okay, so leave the video card plugged in as well. See if it gives you any new errors or even gets tells you to hit any key to reboot (this may happen with no drives installed, or you may not get past POST and have an error about no hard drives).

After that, start plugging things in one by one, starting with keyboard, and test after each item. See if you can get into POST with just the keyboard, then try PCI devices, then hard drive and CDROM. It could be as simple as a slightly mis-seated cable or PCI card.

thank for replying. It doesn't do anything when i press tab or del, and if i keep pressing it or hold the comp will make a clicking noise. I'm not home right now, but when i get back i'll see what happens.

i have a question about the front panel switches. Does it matter how i face the pins? Like the top is labeled pwrswitch, resetswitch. Should i face it up or down?

Hi, The switches don't care which way you plug them. The Leds don't light if they are wrong. Jim

i forgot to mention that i see 3 LED lit on the motherboard when i power on the psu. the one for the video card is green. the 2 on top of the front panel switch is one green and one red.

This might help someone visualize if they have a kn8

Your manual should tell you what the LEDs mean.

If you mean a LED on the front of the case is red, this is probably the hard drive activity LED. If it's steadily lit, then it seems likely that you have a drive issue if some sort.
