Problem with New Build

So I have a fun little problem. I flip on the power switch for the power supply - and a green led lights up on the MB, press the power switch and the fans and the front panel lights turn on, but no power to USB, no LAN lights, not beeps, no post. JOY!

My specs are:

ASUS P5W DH Deluxe Motherboard
E6420 CPU
G. Skill Ram (have 4GB only 1GB installed at present)
Gigabyte 8600GTS (the silent one)
All drives are disconnected
Silverstone LSC20M case
Thermaltake Toughpower 650W PS

I can only think of three possibilities at present:

1. The Bios issue - I got an old bios and it is not compatible with the E6420 CPU
2. The motherboard is DOA
3. The CPU is DOA

I think it might be the MB, as there is no beep error message during startup, which should be present (I'm assuming) even if the CPU is DOA. I have been unable to find details of the symptoms of the bios issue, so I cannot rule that out....

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks!

Do a minimal install outside the box. Just GPU, one stick of ram and HDD. Make sure the stick of ram is in the right slot for just one stick. Try the GPU in another slot.

Interesting, I just removed the graphics card to see it was a possible power problem, as the 8600GTS does not use the PCI-e power from the PS, and, while the symptoms are the same, after a second or two the system powers down automatically.

OK, now I'm confused. I'm not familiar with that particular card but, when I look at the pictures of it, I see no additional sockets for power. So, if the card is not drawing power from the PCI-e slot on the MB, where is the power connector?

It draws power from the PCI-e slot, but does not use the added power from the PS's PCI-e power connector. As the card only draws 71watts it does not need the added boost directly from the power supply.

not yet, I won;t be able to for a few hours at least. I'm currently at work, and when I get a break I will work on it (yes the computer is at work too, but its my personal build).

did you install the standoofs under your motherboard, make sure the back of your motherboard isn't touching the tray or case.

Definately installed the standoffs. And I think I figured out the problem. The 4 pin ATX 12V connector was not working correctly - luckily there was an extra that is 4+4 pins for certain motherboards and it now boots, with beeping - no monitor hooked up yet but its a start!

It Posts! Excellent! Thanks for the help Magnus! Without trying it outside the case I probably would not have tried to switch power cables! Now the joys of rerouting all of the cables and installing vista!
