Problem with new build.

Hello. I am having a problem with a new computer I am building. I am using the same hard drives from my old computer. Both computers use XP home.
I formatted my boot drive: 36 G rapter. After installing windows successfully, I installed a 500 G Western Digital Cavier with all kinds of stuff on it that I would like this new computer to use. Windows says the drive needs formatting, but when I reinstall it in my old computer it works fine. How can I get this drive to work on my new computer without formatting it? Thank you.

on the old system, change the controller to a generic default, reboot, and once the generic controller allows the 500GB to operate on the old system, shut it down and try moving the drive over to the new system.

Sounds logical. I will give it a try when I will get back from work. Thanks.

Are you installing the Service Packs for XP? 1 is needed to see larger hard drives. 2 is needed for internet security and 3 for the majority of recent fixes.

Hey Robi, just curious...why would this work?

I'm ovbiously showing my ignorance here, but the MB controller talks to the HD, and the HD initiates itself to that controller......but then you remove the HD, and it can't talk any language other than that of the first controller?

Now be easy, remember I'm an old coot with alotta partying behind him!

Ah, I had not installed any service packs yet. I will try that first. Thanks.

hippie, it sets the start heads and etc so that any motherboard should see the drive easily.
ricelo, unless you have a extremely old version of XP, it should have at least SP2 included.

If you don't have SP1 installed yet, that is definately your issue.
