Problem with new 240hz monitor

So, hello, my xg248q has just arrived. I connected it to my gtx 1080 with the dp cable that came wth it. in the begininning it was saying display port no signal, but when i turned on the pc it worked. I instantly noticed it was running at 60 hz, so i went to nvidia control panel, but the maximum refresh rate i cam set is 120hz... why is this? Is the cable non well connected? Pls help! Thx and sry for my bad english...

Are you 100% sure? Should i download some asus software to get to 240hz??

yea i would try it, and make sure its a shorter cable. of course im not 100% sure of anything but you can return it if not right? (i extensively googled your issue for 25 seconds and found many others with cable included not doing 144hz and being stuck at 60 so you tell me.

240Hz should definitely work using the cable that came with the monitor, I can't imagine Asus shipping a cable not capable of 240Hz with one of their expensive 240Hz gaming monitors. Make sure you're using the DisplayPort cable that came with the monitor, not HDMI.

just interesting many others in asus forums say the cable is bad for 144hz and was stuck @ 60hz.. I also am appalled, a 144hz monitor not working with supplied cable i agree is unacceptable. I would still buy the new cable 1.3 free return on amazon even if it works or not.

Even if they're doing things wrong, as long as they're using an HDMI cable or DisplayPort cable they should be getting at least 120Hz capability. If they're not it's probably their own fault for using a cable adapter that doesn't support the correct cable standard, or they are using a display-out on their laptop that doesn't support the correct standard, or perhaps they're using a graphics card that is so old it doesn't support the correct standard.

I know of plenty people who have complained that they only got 120Hz rather than 144Hz, but that's because they tried using an HDMI cable while 144Hz requires dual-link DVI or DisplayPort.

240Hz will only work with DisplayPort.

In OPs case, if he's using a desktop GTX 1080 with the included DisplayPort cable and no cable adapters, then I agree it's probably be the cable that is at fault. I just think that's pretty unlikely since even pretty old DisplayPort cables are 240Hz capable, it only requires version 1.2 for 1080p@240Hz. I mean it could be a faulty cable, but what are the chances of that when it works at 120Hz?
