Problem with netscape dial-up, can't connect

First off this is for a customer of mine, I have DSL.

I haven?t used dialup for about 8 years, so I am a little rusty. But I believe I know how to set it up.

Using a standard phone line I plugged it into the data port of the 56k modem. I also installed the Netscape software. It dials, connects, checks my password and says I'm ready to go. I see the network icon in the try say that I have a connection.

Yet on stage 4 of 4, the Netscape connection software hangs at either "authenticating" or "initializing" I forgot ;P But its stage 4 of 4 stages, after the network icon on my tray alerts me as being connected.

I even went into the network settings on the computer and created my own dialer. It works and doesn?t hang at all. But if I go to google.com, run a tracert, or ping a host, nothing happens.

So does anyone know what could be the matter? The line isn?t in use, the antivirus software has been disabled, there is no firewall... what gives?

Please help, thanks!

BTW Netscape customer support sucks.
