Problem with NEC 3500

I have a NEC 3500 dvd burner but it is not burning DVDs or CDs as fast as it should. It burns DVDs at 8x and CDs at 16x. I upgraded the firmware to see if that would solve my problem. The DVD burning speed might be because I only have 8x media but it should burn CDs at 48x, right? What gives?

This is quite the elusive thread, I see.

Anyways, the NEC 3500 drives claim to burn CD-Rs at a max of 48x, but that's only with two specific brands of media. Mostly you'll get 32x with good media, or 16x with poorer media. You also need high-quality media (T-Y DVD+Rs) to burn DVDs faster than 8x.

Burner will only burn a cdr/dvdr media at what media code in the firmware allows...it maybe that the NEC 3500 is very picky with what cdr media it will burn at 48x...as for dvd media not all 8x media can be overspeeded to 16x...depends on the media code and what the firmware will allow

try at cdfreaks to see what people are getting on their 3500 with the media they use...

I thought the 3500 wasnt picky about media. Especially if I have 52x rated media and it wont burn at anything above 16x.

You don't say whether you are burning cds from hd data or from another optical drive. If the burning software detects too many errors or buffer underruns when acquiring data, it will default to a slower speed. A lot may depend on how it is hooked up on the ide channels, and what is there with it.

Umm the CDRs are Memorex 52x rated.

Dont have a problem burning at the max speed on my other burners.

Gee thanks for letting all know in advance...VL states it all as most Memorex is made in Taiwan or Mexico with very few coming from Japan or Europe which would probably handkle the higher burn speeds....You can read about it HERE
