Problem with my Toshiba dvd drive, please help

I have the Toshiba 16X Model SD-M1502 that I bought from Newegg. I'm having problems reading certain cd-r. I put in a blank new samsung 12X cdr and the light goes on and off repeatedly but nothing happens. I put in a sony 8X with data on it and same thing. Other sony cds with data are ok. Also some software cds make a lot of noise (whirring sound) on the drive. Help would be greatly appreciated. Did I get a bad drive?

if you tried different brands of CDRs and several media and still face such problems with a TOSHIBA, i'd say the drive is not really bad, but not working properly. so get another one or RMA it, if it's still in time.
