problem with my pioneer 16x dvd rom

i have a pioneer 16x dvd rom and for some reason it doesn't work with XP even after I updated my xp pro edition. is there another way or setting to make it work? everytime I pop in a CD the indicator will light couple times and it'll stop running after few secs. doesn't respond when I double click the drive in desktop. what's wrong?

Is this occuring with all types of CD's being entered...such as Magazine Cover disks, games, Audio. I have encountered an issue with Windows 2000 where you put a disk in the drive....light comes on, spins a bit, you double click and "Please Insert a disk into Drive Q" You leave the disk in and do a reboot and all of a sudden it's there....it's intermittent though, most of the time it picks up!

In an extreme circumstance it can mean the laser is mis-aligned or dead but i'm guess it's not that old, I did hear about slot loader sometimes having a mis-aligned laser causing them to not recognise that a disk is in.
