Problem with my PCIe 6600GT

So I got too comfortable building computers, and I took a shortcut. Basically I decided to replace the std cooler, with a VF700 before testing it. Well it may be faulty. Basically it distorts the image, at times it's the whole image, at other times its just lines. I can work because I have an old PCI card that I'm using.

When I installed the forceware drivers, windows generally works. Every now and again it distorts, and it still doesn't work outside of windows.

Can I do anything?
 
did you reseat the cooler, if that dosnet work, completely reinstall cooler with different compound, if that dosent work check if the core has been damaged during installation(physical deformation, though yuo should probably do this during the reseating to save some time)
 
when did you buy the card? and where is it from? errr....which company made it?

you might be able to just RMA it with Stock fan re-installed.
 
Temps wouldn't be a problem as it happens just at bootup (as well as later), cold cooler. I've reset it once already, didn't see any physical deformations, and I've been using AS5. I'll go ahead and reset it again, looking a lot more carefully, and using Zalman's grease.

Card is MSI PCIe 6600GT, from newegg.

Thanks, and if there are any other suggestion plz. I can't afford another card, and a GF4 PCI, isn't going to cut it.
 
when checking for deformation, check the corners for some sompression. it usualyy happens to cpus when the hsf is instaalled without that heat transfer plate thingy but on gpus it can happen too.
 
Just finished checking, nothing apparent. Even gently ran my fingers around the edges, nothing obvious. When I remounted same error.

Hopefully somebody can help me out, but if not, I'm going to try and send it to MSI. I'm sure I voided the warranty, but maybe I can sneak it by. If anybody has a suggestion for removing the ramsinks I'd be in your debt.
