Problem with my new build

So I finally got my new system put together yesterday and installed Farcry to see what it could do. I installed everything fine but when I tried to actually play the game it brought up the initial farcry logo then froze. The same thing happened with Call of duty.

When I installed Dark Age of Camelot, which doesn't require a disk when you play, everything worked fine.

While it's trying to load farcry, I noticed the my rosewill combo drive makes a very loud read noise then dies down. Then the comp freezed 20-30 seconds later if I don't cancel it before.

I can listen to music ok from a cd, but it makes a loud noise and takes 5 or 6 second to switch to the next song.

I'm thinking this is my Cd drive's fault but I was just wondering if anyone here had any thoughts on the matter. This is my first build, so a lot of this is all very confusing.

One more thing, my CDdrive was retail but it didn't come with any drivers, and there's nothing on the web site. I think I may try and put it an older cd drive after I get back from work.

Some CD / DVD burners don't work well with some copy protected CDs, that's one reason I usually put just a DVD-ROM (not CD burner combo) as drive one, burner as drive 2 (or vice versa).

You shouldn't need drivers for a CD/DVD drive.

Yes Dave is correct, I also have Farcry and had problems when it was first installed. I was trying to play it from my burner. I got to reading some tech information for Farcry and found that it can not be played from a burner, you must run the game from a cd-rom drive. I'm sure there is probably a fix for this, but you may be better off purchasing a cd-rom drive.

Thanks for the info. I'm having the same problem with Call of duty, and I know it worked on my old cddrive, which was also a cdRom/CDR/CDRW drive.

It can vary by burner model. The game companies sometimes offer a patch to disable the safedisc or whatever, but otherwise adding a plain reader or looking for a no-CD crack (which could be a virus/trojan) are your only options.

... of course it is also possible your new drive is just defective, but the copy protection / burner interaction is at least as likely.

But it let me install both games from the CD's, it just won't get past the logo when I try to play them. Is there a difference?

Yes, the copy protection is checked each time you run the game, not when you install it.

Just a $20 DVD-ROM drive without CDR/RW. I'm using an Asus, and my old computer had a Liteon but I don't think brand matters much as long as it isn't a burner.

true. but that crack thing would save some money and would do the job. they have them at lan centers!

True too
But sometimes you can't find a crack, or the crack has problems (try one with Half-Life 2 and they'll cancel your account and void your license), or the crack might contain a worm/virus/trojan.

doesn't making an image of the cd that you put in the Drive tray another option?

then you can mount it on a image drive, but you need to let go alot more space than a crack tho (approx as much space as the cd) software like alcohol can do that
