Problem with my new 2.26 ghz P4 processor, running at 1.70ghz

Yesterday I bought a P4 2.26ghz processor, 533 FSB motherboard (Chipset 850E Intel) and 512MB of PC-1066 RDRAM (two 256mb cards). I put a new computer together with it, but the processor is only running at 1700mhz. The CPU/PCI Frequency setting on the motherboard and bios is 100/33, but it should be at 133/33 to run at 2266mhz. Whenever I set it to 133/33, Windows doesn't load and says there's an NDIS error, and something about a protection fault (I reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled Win98...same thing). When I turn off the computer and back on again, there's no video, and on the next boot the bios runs a safe mode thing and says the CPU settings are incorrect. The three options are Manual, 1700mhz and 2266mhz. Selecting the latter two adjusts the CPU/PCI Frequency setting accordingly; 100/33 and 133/33. With 1700mhz everything works correctly. The 2266mhz setting should work, because that's what the processor is! The ram is in correctly, and I even tried switching it around. There needs to be two blank ram cards in there too according to the motherboard instructions, which is what I have in there. The CPU is installed correctly with large heatsink/fan. I have a 400W power supply. What could be the problem?

I would rma the board (return to the vender) and possibly the cpu to be safe. Most likely the board is the problem. If memory was an issue, you wouldn't get past the initial post. Or you can call tech support at the mobo website if you can find a contact number. Good luck.

If you're using Win 98, there is a known problem with the NDIS driver and processors running over 2 Ghz.
Search MS Knowledge base or Google for the solution.

This should be added to the FAQs. I didn't see it under Operating Systems or CPU/Processors. Great info, bacillus.

If I went and bought Windows XP, do you guys think it would work, and just live with the power up problems? If I'm getting that Win98 NDIS message, then the CPU must be running at 2266mhz right? Every time I turn on the computer, I would need to do it twice, then tell the bios to stay at the 2266mhz setting. I would just leave the computer on in sleep mode when I'm not using it. I just worry that there might be random lockups in Windows, or I would overheat the CPU or something. Then again, if something blows there's a warranty, and I didn't do anything wrong :) Just a thought.

Just go to that link and copy that newer ndis file into windows/system directory over the top of the older file and it will work....

Don't waste the money on xp unless you need it, and you don't to do what you want to....

Don't worry about overheating this thing....Intel has thermal protection...Just fire it up and monitor the temps for awhile...Unless you can't install a hsf or thermal paste you should be fine....

I didn't see anything to download on that page. Not having to buy XP would be awesome, because it's too damn expensive.
