My computer config.:

AMD Athlon 850; PNY Nvidia Ti4200 64 M; Soundblaster Live Value; Win 98 SE;

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-7ZX-1

Problem:

I used to use 2 sticks of 128 PC133 memory. I once tried to put another piece of 128M in, then I could not play any games (freezed). I though there was sth. wrong with the 3rd slot and let it be.

Now, I have two sticks of 256 PC 133 memory. But I can't use them together. If I put them in side by side, windows can not start up; If I put them in 1st and 3rd slots, windows can be up, but I can't play any games neither. But if I remove one of them, everything is fine.

So it seems that the mobo does not allow me to use memo more than 256M!!!!!! I use most updated drivers.

Pleave give me your kind help and suggestions.

hm, it just sounds as if either the board doesn't like the memory, the memory doesn't like each other, or the memory timings are slightly too fast for one of the DIMMs..

here are some hopefully helpful tips:

you should try dumbing down your memory timings. (cas 3 instead of cas 2)
increase the RAM voltage if you can 3.3 -> 3.5
try another stick of hopefully a different brand of memory so you can use 2 256 sticks ( sometimes mixing doesn't work well )

hopefully some of this is useful for you.

Also, what is your power supply's brand and model? Maybe the extra DIMM is pushing the system over the edge... they can consume up to 15W of power per DIMM. But I think Yield has the most likely reasons enumerated already.

Well, thank you both. Here is a question that may be dumb:

How can I change the voltage of the memory? Is there a software I can use to tweak it or I need to change the jumper on the mobo?
