Problem with my DVD burner

I recently got a laptop and today I tried to burn a DVD but everytime i would try, it would say that it couldn't. I am using nero, and my drive is an 8x Nec DVDRW/CDRW and I am using these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817132815]DVD's[/URL]

I am assuming that my problem is with the DVD's not the drive, am I correct?

Your drive is DVDRW / CDRW ... it will not work with DVD-R or DVD+R media

how old is the laptop? do you have a link to the manuf? I find it hard to fathom this day in age that they would make a dvdrw only drive.

It was bought in february of 2005
it is a dell

does that same thing apply to CD's as well, because I have burnt many CD's that aren't RW on this

A silly question but did you remember to choose DVD in Nero when you set up your burn?

Not so silly as I forgot to do that the first time I burnt a DVD.

yeah, I made sure of that.
I also tried running nero's backup program and tried to backup what i wanted, but that failed too
