Problem with my bros laptop screen

for the last couple of weeks my brother's laptop (gateway) screen (15.4" widescreen) has been flashing on and off while the screen was being moved (open and closed) and now it just got really dark and it won't get bright again.
What could this be, how much would it cost to repair it?
 
Best guess: loose/faulty LCD connection. Is it under warranty? Probably cost at least a few hundred bucks, labor is expensive.
