Problem with my ATHOLON 1.4

I just installed my new AThlon 1.4 runnin on Asus A7A266 and I'm getting sporadic system freeze for maybe 7-10 second intervals here and there. Anyone have any clues as to why this is. I'm using a hard drive that was used in my old celeron system and was not re-formated before I changed over, I just Plugged and played the HD on the new system.

Thanks

Aight thanks guys....as always, members here have been nothing short of helpfull and courteous!

Provide a little more info and people can give a better diagnosis. System specs? When does the system freeze? During boot up? What O/S? Does it reach the desktop? Any blue screens or other error messages?

More info would be helpful! Basically if you change the mobo and keep the same install of Windows you are asking for trouble! There are so many low-level device driver changes with different chipsets and even motherboard brands that it will just muck up Win2K. Just bite the bullet and reformat...it will take 2-3 hours of your time but it will be well worth it in terms of system stability.

System info:

Athlon 1.4ghz
Asus A7A266 MB
384MG Crucial Ram
nvidia tnt2 PCI
Running on 250W power source

Still working on replacing parts like the case (power supply) and vid card. Running Windows ME and I'm finding that the freeze points are random. Has been happeing this morning on chats like AOL AIM and ICQ, but will happen when surfing too. No Freeze on boot up and not gettin blue screens anymore since i fixed the video drivers.

Ahhhhhh......

Your power supply is too small for your system. At minimum it should be a high quality 300w like an Antec. A 340w is highly suggested for the 1.4Ghz TBirds.

EDIT: Oh we posted at the same time. Only temporary huh? IMHO, its a driver issue. Still, I would consider a larger poewr supply. That 250w may lead to trouble in the future.

so you think the prob lies in the Power? I know that the supply was not adequate, I'm only running this temp until i find the time to get a new powersupply. Just hoped it wasn't a processor issue.

i think your CPU is fine. The power supply really does need to be changed. For future posts, put a link to your rig in your sig, like me for example.

good luck,

dave

in the mean time, try underclocking your CPU to say 900 or 1000mhz. That will decrease the power usage of your CPU and may help to determine if it is a power prob.

I agree start with changing the PSU,Enermax 350w PSU would be nice (365P-VE model),still get problems then format and clean install of OS with the motherboard chipset drivers etc.

🙂

I think the problem is that you're spelling it "ATHOLON". Spell it "Athlon" and I bet it works lickety split.
