Background:

A64 3500+ @ 2.7
OCZ 3200 Plat R2 @ DDR490
2 BFG 6800GT OC PCI-E

When I first built the system I installed Nvidia drivers version 66.93. Everything seemed to run fine so I decided to try the 71.20 drivers and see what a difference it would make.

With the 66.93 drivers my 3D05 score was ~8700, and with the 71.20 drivers the 3D05 scores were ~8900. So I decided to play around with overclocking with the 71.20 drivers. Got the cards to run at 400/1.15 (370/1.00 stock) with a 3D05 score of ~10k. I then turned it down to 390/1.1 to play games at.

The problem I had with running the 71.20 drivers was that it would report my 6800 temps as 61-64c idle and ~70-71 load (the 66.93 drivers reported the cards at ~49-50c idle ~59c load) and I thought this was rather strange as the cards did not feel that hot to the touch. So after about 30 hours (a lot of this was spent idleing) I decided to switch back to the 66.93 versions.

Now when I try playing games (hl2, cs:s) or even run 3D05 the cards will freeze and I would have to do a hard reboot. This usually occurs about 20 mins into games or around the first cpu test of 3D05.

I ran prime95 for a few hours and no errors so I think the CPU/RAM is working fine. I did a system resotre to the day before I installed the 71.20 drivers and that didn't seem to fix the problem.

What do you guys think the problem is? Could the 71.20 drivers really have pushed the temps up that high resulting in possibly messing up the cards?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

70-71C load temps are not high. My 6800 GT ran 85C with no problems and the ATI 850 runs as hot as 90 with no "apparent" problems. Go back to the 71.20 drivers.

Sometimes it just doesn't go well when going backwards in driver versions. I suggest using driver Cleaner 3 (google on it) to get a totally clean install of the 67.66 drivers (betas from the Nvidia download screen... takes you to NView)
