My friend has a problem with the hardware mentioned above. Everytime he starts a 3D game his computer just locks up. He doesn't have active connection to the internet, so I have to post this for him. Now, does anyone know what is the problem with the above setup. I tried playing around with the bios settings, with no success, however. Any other ideas?

Did you try newer drivers? And did you install the most recent VIA 4-in-1s?

Argo,Try setting memory timings to normal in BIOS(I had the same problem which was solved as soon as this was changed),disable fastwrites,
also make sure you have installed the Via 4 in 1 drivers, btw my system is now rock stable after I change Bios Memory timings . If you still get problems try the 8/10ns setting with CL3 timing.Let me know what speed & type of ram he has so I can help him out even more.

The Det drivers are for another card(Nvidia TNT - Geforce2)so don't use them. The Viper2 is a S3 Z2000 chipset.

Did your friend just get the Viper2 recently? If so, make sure that the drivers for the previous card are completely removed first. If he has recently upgraded the drivers for the Viper2, make sure that he did the upgrade exactly how the new drivers instructed him to. If the problem persists, re-install Directx 7.0a. Also make sure he is using the latest drivers for the Viper2.

Mem: your idea sounds good. I disabled fast writes, even try switching to AGP 2x mode, but that didn't help. I think memory timings were at 8/10, however, I'll have to double check that today. The stick 128MB crucial (i think cas 3).
He is building this computer, so obviously he doesn't have any drivers left from the old video card.
To everyone: Well, he was doing everything himself, so I can't guarantee he did it right. I'm gonna go ever there today (he lives next door), and try to do it myself. We'll see what happens.

Argo,I`ve Crucial PC133 cas2 ram ,check the hst/clk setting mine is +33 for my PC133 ram also it should work okay at 4x AGP mode if his card supports 4xAGP mode,my Geforce2 MX is working great in 4x AGP mode.

I just figured out that the cause of the problem is his Diamdon MX300 sound card. When I disable the card it works fine. The onboard sound is disabled, and as far as I know, the lattest drivers for the card are installed. Any ideas?

Btw, do you guys know when I can find different versions of Vortex drivers.

Yes buy a SBlive or try different drivers for your soundcard.Btw I have the same board (MSI K7T PRO) & it works great with my Geforce2 MX & SBlive at AGP 4x.
