Problem with Monitor, Question about Replacement

Hey I need some thoughts here. This monitor, a Gateway CrystalScan 700 (EV700), is a 17" CRT that is nearly 7 years old now. It still looks great, but I have noticed lately that sometimes, text is a little bluish. Like, the edges of text will be slightly blue or just simply discolored, and it does it in linux too. I noticed recently the text was black, but then did the blue tint, and then flickered back to normal. Is the electron gun misfiring or something? Remember: this monitor has been used EVERY DAY for the last 7 years. Am I right on this or is there something else wrong?

So I am unemployed, but I am getting a new job next week. I'm thinking of a 17" replacement, because I can't really fit a 19" CRT on this area without sacrificing space that I want to be there. I don't really NEED a bigger screen anyways. So, this is also going to enable me to do a cheap upgrade. I came upon this Viewsonic G71f+B monitor, is that a good one? PLEASE don't say the Sony CPD-E240, because nobody carries that anymore. I would like $200 and under for the screen, so this includes just about every monitor out there. This isn't $200 with shipping....$200 without. I think the G71f+ would be a nice screen, your thoughts?

Oh yeah, I play quite a few different games, will start web-design again, program occaisonally, watch movies and read lots of text. Thanks for your (hopefully) helpful and clear-cut responses!

As with you, funds for a display were tight. So I read reviews and comparison tests on line. Read this forum and a couple I googled. Then ended up buying a lease pull Mits.
Used monitors are not an easy sell and difficult to ship. You might find a good'en near you in the For Sale or Trade forum. Many ppl are going LCD and need to cash out good CRTs.

If nothing else, this is a bump :)

Indeed, funds are tight. I'm really looking for a new one, but if it is used I will try to find a refurbished one off of Newegg. I suspect that this monitor is good, and I really haven't made a bad hardware choice yet :). Unless someone replies and tells me how it is, i'm going to think it. I am certain now that the monitor is having issues, because it exhibits the same effect when on another computer at our house.

I've been doing some research, as I always do, and it seems there are quite a few good 17" screens. I would wait longer and get a 19 inch, because I initially wanted to do that, but what if I can't get a display eventually? :p That would surely ruin my day. :)

Perhaps, but I find the 791 to be near $200, before the $20-$39 in shipping.
$174 total sounds much better to those on a tight budget
