I am running the cancer research program (grid.org) on all of my computers 24/7.

Therefore, I set my monitor to go into power-saving/blank mode after 1 minute.

However, on rare occassions, after finishing doing something on the computer, the screen does NOT go into the power-saving/blank mode after one minute of inactivity.

Sometimes it will eventually going the power-saving mode but it is much longer than one minute (sometimes 5 to 10 minutes) and at other time it does not seem like it is going to go into power-saving at all, so I have to go into screen properties, and just come back out and it will then go into the power-saving mode after the one minute of inactivity.

And yes, I have the latest and greatest video drivers and have all security and OS patches applied.

Is this just poor programing by Microsoft or is this possibly a hardware problem ?

Thanks.

If I had to guess, which is what I'm doing, I would say that its a Microsoft problem. I've had similar problems with that before. Next time it does it, pull up the system manager and take a look at your processes running. It could be that one of the programs is running a process that is preventing the screen from going into "sleep" mode.
