thanks again for the help in my last thread

i now have another question: i know that it is best to have all the RAM the same, however, i was wondering if there would be any potential damage if i mix RAM. the modules in question would be the OCZ plat. 8500 and OCZ plat. rev 2 6400. if i was to have both 2gb sets at the same speeds, timings, and voltages, would/should there be a problem? also, is there a risk by underclocking the higher speed RAM to match the lower speed ones? this will only be my setup temporarily, if it works, until i decide to put together the parts for my backup, as at that time i will move the lower speed RAM into that system.

thanks in advance

btw: i know that the 8500s use micron d9s whereas the 6400s use PROMOS ICs...will that pose a problem?

As long as the ram tests out as compatible and working, then I wouldn't worry too much. It's fine to underclock one type of memory to match the other. The only real issue is if one type of RAM takes higher voltage, then you need to set the overall RAM voltage higher to match specs, and you could be over-volting the other RAM. Depending on how much you are over-volting, then that could be a problem, although boosting DDR2 voltage from 1.8v to 2.0v is generally not a problem. I don't know about higher. Overvolting to 2.4v or something could definately fry some RAM if they aren't specced for higher voltages.

the 6400s are rated at b/w 1.9 and 2.1 (i have them at 2.1 atm)
the 8500s are rated at 2.1 (im assuming i can tighten the timings easily to match the 6400s at 800MHz as the 8500s use d9s)

thanks for the reply
