Problem with microphone

My friend is trying to get a mic to work on her computer. First we tried the onboard sound (Abit KV7 motherboard). I then tried a cheap sound blaster PCI card, which still didn't work. Both cards, onboard and PCI, play sound just fine.

Her microphone is brand new, so I suppose its POSSIBLE it came dead.
I checked everything in the sound control panel, I made sure the sound recording and voice recording devices were set correctly etc.

Anyone have any ideas before she buys a new microphone?

What operating system? Does sound otherwise work ok on her computer?

did you uncheck the mute at the microphone???

Windows XP.

Yes, I unchecked mute on microphone, line in, and when it didn't work, everything else

We can hear sound just fine out of both sound cards.
