Problem with Matlab file extensions

So I have Matlab installed on this computer, and then I recently installed Microsoft Office as well. But now whenever I try to open up a Matlab .mat file from a Windows folder, it tries to open it up in Access.

So I went to the folder options and set the file type .mat to open with Matlab, but it still tries to open with Access.

Now I'm out of ideas. I tried doing the Shift+right click on filename trick to get the "Open With" prompt, but that doesn't even show up for some reason. So now I don't know how to associate it with Matlab.

Is it possible that the file isn't even a .mat file? .mat does not show up in the file name, and then I hover above the file it says "Matlab data file," which I assume is a .mat file. Anyone know what could be the problem?

try this. I had the same problem where the files were being recognized as Microsoft Access Tables. Reinstall Matlab. If that doesn't work uninstall Office & matlab, reinstall matlab. Then export the HKLM matworks (matlab) registry keys. Reinstall office & then import the registry keys. It's a bit of a hack, but it did work for me

MS office may try to reset file extentions every time if fires up. There may be an option to stop it somewhere, but Im not sure.
