Problem with Macbook Pro

Hey guys I have a problem with my laptop and right now I really suspect that the screen is broken as it powers on but just has no video. Is there anything I can do via the keyboard to maybe play music to test this theory ie use shortcuts to load up itunes and play a song? If so what keys would need to be pressed? Thanks.

It's the 8600GT GPU that died. It's a known issue. Apple will fix it, with or without Applecare.

Two things you can do to test your theory that just the screen (backlight) is dead.

1: Take a flashlight and shine it behind the apple logo, it will shine through the screen.
2: Hit CMD+Space, type iTunes, hit enter, give it a few seconds to launch, now you might want to hit enter and then hit space bar. Alternate those two. Or, once iTunes is loaded, use your remote to press play.

HOWEVER, Kmax is probably right, the 8600m probably died and Apple will fix it.

Hey thanks for responding...a couple of questions...

1. Is this something I can take care of if I am currently in Argentina?
2. I did the flashlight thing and it shined through the apple logo through the screen...does that mean a definite backlighting issue or possible nvidia video problem?
3. Any idea how long the repair would take?
4. Would plugging it into an external mon do anything?

Yea.. it sucks. I had mine die twice on me. Finally got them to just give me a new system. On average, both times, it took 2-3 days to get fixed. If you're super nice to one of the Geniuses they might do it faster.

If you hook up an external monitor and it cannot get a signl, then it is the 8600. If you do get a signal, then it is the LCD.
