Problem with Logitech Elite Cordless Keyboard

Is there a problem with mixing the Logitech Elite keyboard from the keyboard/wireless combo with the base from just the MX700 mouse?

The background is, my brother already had a MX700 wireless mouse and I got the combo but didn't need the keyboard. So I kept the base unit and the mouse and gave my brother the keyboard but it isn't being recognized by his base. As far as I know the base is the same but I could be wrong. Maybe there are different models and for some reason it's incompatible? I mean they are both MX700's. Has anyone done this or know for sure whether it works or not? I'm confused.
 
Well that explains it. That sucks. I guess I just figured that since it's the same mouse, it would use the same base. There goes that idea.
