Problem with laptop pcmcia slot?

Only one of my pcmcia slots on my laptop will function correctly. I am certain they both worked well not long ago. The only card I have is an smc wireless network card. What could be worng, other than the slot going bad? When I put the card in, the lights come on (little LED's signifying the laptop sees it) but the "network connection" icon is not connected.
I looked in the Device Manager and everything is OK there.
I think I had a similar problem a long time ago but when I went to the Device Manager it showed up in there. I reinstalled the driver and everything was OK.
Any ideas?
