Problem with Laptop Battery

One of my friends is going to sell me her old laptop. Its an HP n3250. While testing it, I noticed that the icon in the taskbar showed that the battery was charging (and was 10% charged at that time). I let the battery charge for another 5 hours, but the computer will not turn on without the AC adaptor. After 5 hours, the battery icon still says charging, and it still has a 10% charge. Any ideas what could be wrong or what I can do to revive this battery?

Most likely it has a bad battery. It is also possible that the charging circuit on the motherboard is faulty.
