Problem with lan

Hey, im hosting a lan party but when i search for computers in a game. It wont find them on the lan, yet every other computer finds it. I can play against other computers on the internet, but not lan. Anyone know how to fix this problem. I have penicilian virus protection that came on the motherboard cd. Do I need to open a port? Here are my specs.

Windows XP Pro Service pack 2
Asus A8V deluxe socket 939
AMD 3000
GeForce FX 5700le
Corsair (2*512) Value select

My dad (a network admin.)added a host file showing the ip addresses of the computers in our lan. restarted the computer and it found them.
