I just bought the board and i want to use raid for my new HD. i followed the instruction but when it's time to install the OS (windows 98 se), it hangs on me during setup. the last thing it says is something like 'bus scan using mechanical #2'. unfortunately, i'm not at my comp right now so i can't give the exact message. anyone's help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Need a little more info..

What type of hardrives?

Are you running them on one channel or two?

Do you have cable select on? If so DONT.

If you have WD drives and are only using one per channel either pull out the jumper completly or put it on the unlabeled pins.

Make sure your using latest raid drivers from the website and not the included disk

Make sure you setup the raid first in the raid menu

as for the HDs, they're Maxtor D740X 40 gb's

they're each in their own channel

they're jumpers are both set to master

according to the Fasttrak Raid Bios, they are setup and functioning

as for the raid drivers, i can't get to the stage we one would install them, because win98 hangs early on in the setup.

hope this is enough info...

Once created the RAID in BIOS, you should boot from a floppy and Partition the 80Gb disk (Fdisk), and then formated it (Format).
Then boot the Win98SE CDROM or boot from floppy in MSDOS with some CDROM driver in config.sys and mscdex on autoexec.bat, put the cd and execute setup.

I have the same board, and I had troubles when setting up my OS on the built-in raid also. My problem was that the HDD's were set to "master", like you said. They needed to be set to "single", not sure if this will effect you also, but it really frustrated me.

Good luck,

Resolving the Scanning PCI BUS using Mechanism #2 Error when using the Win98/Win98SE Boot Disk

During the initialization of a Win98/Win98SE Boot Disk the system may hang and display a message that says:

"Scanning PCI BUS using Mechanism #2"

This problem happens under certain circumstances or configurations. To get around this particular issue you will need to rename all of the SCSI ASPI drivers on the diskette, follow the instructions below.

**If you are using a SCSI CD Rom or Hard Disk we recommend disconnecting them while using the modified Boot Disk, as they will not be detected.

-Boot up using the Win98/98SE Boot Disk. When you reach the Startup Menu where you can select whether to start the computer with or without CD Rom Support, press the "F5" Key. This will bring you to an A:> prompt.

-Type "REN ASPI2DOS.SYS ASPI2DOS.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Type "REN ASPI4DOS.SYS ASPI4DOS.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Type "REN ASPI8DOS.SYS ASPI8DOS.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Type "REN ASPI8U2.SYS ASPI8U2.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Type "REN ASPICD.SYS ASPICD.OLD" (without quotations) and then press the "Enter" key.

-Press "Ctrl-Alt-Del" to restart the computer.

The process can be reversed if you plan to use the disk to Boot SCSI devices in the future.
