Problem with Japanese Input after Reinstall

For some reason, instead of having the Japanese IME in WinXP convert my hiragana to kanji after pressing space, the finalizer line only underlines one furigana at a time. It's as if the kanji dictionary (if that's what XP uses) has ceased to exist. Has anybody had any similar issues before?
