Problem with Intel Server Board S1200KP with Zeon-1230

I bought Intel Server Board S1200KP with Zeon-1230(no graphic support).

And I trying to turn on computer without graphic card. and it was not working at all.

In this case, could I setup OS with graphic card on it. and remove graphic card and use it through network remote control? Would server run without graphic card?

or I must buy Zeon Processor with Graphic support(-5 series)?

This would be stupid question, but I am hoping this would work.

Interesting you just posted this as I've also purchased the E3-1230 and am killing myself trying to find a mITX motherboard to support it...without luck. My thoughts have also been similar to yours, however, the board has on-board graphics so it should work just plugging a monitor in.

I just stumbled upon this Intel motherboard, and what is very strange, but possibly related to what you see, the E3-1230 is not on the list of Intel supported CPUs - though just about every other E3-12xx is.

Check at this link and look down in the Compatible Products section:

But, searching the Intel site further, I found this - which shows the board has been tested with the E3-1230:

One last link says the on-board video support is for CPU's which include graphics support - otherwise need the PCIE card:

Not sure if you would be able to boot without the PCIE card and a non-graphics CPU.

I have acknowledged that 1230 processor is not on supported processor but is on tested list.

Problem is that, I have case that could not bear graphic card.

and according to intel communities and specification, it is on C206 chipset, but does not support AMT 7.0 technology. I hope it would support on next firmware release but it's only my hope.

There is another C206 board out there, called WADE-8011 from Portwell. but it would bit hard to get. you need to buy it from manufacture from hongkong, I guess. and it doesnt support ECC ram.

I have posted this issue in other forum. and it seems that I have to buy new processor.

Well, I'm on my 2nd motherboard attempting this. The one I'm working on getting to work now is ASRock H67M-ITX. I have read posts in other forums that it will work with E3-1230 (though specs just say i3/i5/i7 with integrated graphics). The board has on-board HD2000/3000, but in caveat it says CPU must have integrated graphics to use it. So, I have just ordered a cheap/low-end PCIE low profile video card. I am using mITX case with only 150W power supply, so we'll see if it will work. The card I ordered does not have on-board fan, just passive heat sink - so it may work. I believe I am in same exact situation as you - just looking to build low-power/high-performance server - remote login to it even without video card would be fine.

The spec sheet there says it supports ECC memory, but it is for E3-1225 - that chip has the integrated graphics.

This board is for specialized/embedded computing. Look at back of it - RS-232 ports - used for interfacing with instruments. Nobody in real-world applications utilize RS-232 anymore.

Is it possible that a new case may be a better solution for you? Would be less expensive than purchasing i7 CPU.

Also, when you say your case could not bear a graphics card, is that because there is no slot for it, or you think it would use too much power?

If too much power is the thought, you might try what I am going to try - even better than the card I found with the heat sink, I found an even older low power one - on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-SFF-DV...817?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item53e959db99

It is low profile (if you're using mITX case) and it is older PCIe - current PCIE 2.0 will support 1.0. It only has a couple chips on it - which for a server box is fine - just minimal graphics.

and about WADE-8011. you are right. it also need -5 series for use on-board graphic.

but guy from portwell told me that it would work with any Zeon E3 series processors.

I saw your reply there from yesterday - unfortunate that it isn't working...but maybe you will figure out a way.

The simple Dell video card didn't work for me (only $8 wasted) - I read somewhere after I received and it didn't work that it is dependent on the motherboard graphics chipset. But, the other which I had ordered with the passive heat sink (no fan) did the trick - machine came to life and is now coming together. I am installing Win 2000 Advanced Server and been having to find older drivers for everything, but it is almost complete (thankfully). So E3-1230 works on ASRock H67M-ITX though it is only spec for i3/i5/i7. I am pretty happy.

I hope yours works out - I truly believe E3-1230 is best chip as far as price/performance for server type apps/builds.
