I built this computer two years ago, and I've had no problems with it up till now. I just flipped it on one day, and I noticed that it was detecting my RAM very slowly. Usually it's instantaneous, but now it's counting RAM in 4 MB increments. Then I got the following message: Serial Presence Detect Device Data Missing or Inconclusive.
It's a 866 mhz PIII w/ 133 FSB, stock cooling, not OC'd, a stick of 128mb 133 mhz SDRAM, a stick of 256mb 133 mhz SDRAM, a 20 GB IBM Deskstar 7200 rpm drive, etc etc. It's not merely an annoyance, either. The error does not allow the computer to boot.
I read somewhere that this is possibly a HD problem, but I don't think it is in this case, because I put the HD in my new computer, and it functioned flawlessly. I thought it might've been a mobo issue, but I bought a new one and it says the same thing. I toyed with my RAM a little, taking one stick out and trying it. Nothing works. Anyone else got any ideas?

Check your RAM using Memtest86. Download it and install it on a floppy using the directions provided. It runs in a non-Windows (Linux actually) GUI so it can check all of your memory and keeps looping over and over until you stop the testing manually. I would test each stick of RAM individually to isolate the problem, if there is one.

What kind of MoBo are you using? Your post leads me to believe that you've tried 2 different MoBos, is that correct?
