Problem with IE 5.5 - Garbled text on web pages

I am having problems with garbled text and what looks like a compressed font on some web pages. The text occupies one and a half lines on some words. If I refresh the screen, it may fix those words but garble others. I don't remember this happening before I downloaded IE 5.5. Do I need to set something in Explorer? Any help please.

What is the primary language set on the IE? Also are you visiting site written in languages other that US?

In Explorer check your language setting: View > Encoding > Auto Select (check it) + select Western European (Windows) = for English.
