Problem with IDE to firewire

Hi all - I have an old external DVD burner (Toshiba, 2x) in a firewire-based box. We recently bought some new 16x Lite-On's. I swapped the burners, and it doesn't work...if the IDE and power cables are hooked up, it doesnt power up, but if I remove the IDE cable (power only), it does power up.

Whats up with this? Is it a firewire chipset thing? Would a firmware update for the burner work?
