Problem with Ide Channel...

I've just built a new system on an Abit kt7 witha duron 800...
I have a 20 gig 7200 rpm 100 ata hard drive...
But every time the computer boots it has this message
"Primary IDE channel no 80 conductor cable installed"

I've been having trouble installling windows ME and windows 2000...
FOr some reason it can't read the files...or transfer them. I'm going to get new os discs to see if that's the problem...

Are you using one of the new style ata 66/100 cables to connect the hard drive? They look the same as the old IDE cables (and has the same 40 pin connectors on both ends) but it has twice the number of conductors (80 wires).

From the error message you get at bootup it would seem you are using an old style cable, or that it's not plugged in quite right. Another option might be a cable that's defective.

Hope that helps.😉🙂

yes...I'm using the ata 100 cable...one with the blue tip...and really thin ribbon...with 2x the wires...
See the thing is...the hard drive was working pretty well. It formatted...it installed even... But i'm still having problems...reading stuff...

It probably is a defective cable eh?
I'll try to get a new one.
