Alright, first to describe the setup.

Two new computers, one is connected directly to DSL using the onboard NIC card (nforce3 mobo, gigabit nic.) This computer also has another NIC in it. Through this second NIC, it is connected to into another computer's onboard NIC (same mobo) via a crossover cable. When connected, the internet on main computer works fine.

When we try and enable internet connection sharing (Windows XP) the internet doesn't work on either computer.

So... computers connected, ICS disabled, works fine. Computers can see each other on the network, etc. As soon as we enable ICS, bam, internet gone on main computer.

I'm fairly familiar with ICS, but i'm stumped, any ideas?

Thanks

With the price of a router as low as $25 it seems to me to be the easy fix. With a router either computer can access the internet even if the other is off and the NAT adds a bit of protection.

LOL you are wasting vivix's money.

Link to: Wireless 4 Port Cable/DSL Gateway Router. $9.99 after rebate.

May be this can Help: DSL PPPOE and Cable/DSL Routers.

Ignore the prices in the links above. The same or similar hardware can be found for 60%-90% less.

However if you have Stocks in ICS and want to keep it.

Link to: Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

And if ICS is too complicated try this Software.

Link to: AnalogX Proxy.

When you enable ICS on a machine, it forces the IP address for the internet-sharing adaptor to 192.168.0.1. My guess is that this is the same IP as the DSL modem, or on a different subnet (most DSL modems and ethernet routers seem to default to the 192.168.1.x range, not 192.168.0.x).

Also, are you running any kind of firewall on the ICS computer? Do you have ICF (XP's built-in firewall) enabled as well? That might cause issues, especially 3rd-party firewall software. Some simply doesn't work with ICS, and others require specific configuration settings to work with ICS.

(Now that I think about it, an NF3 mobo - do you have NVidia's firewall enabled? You may need to configure it specifically for your ICS arrangement.)
