Problem with icons in XP home

The icon displayed depends on the files type. I assume all of the files that display the default icon are of the same type. open windows explorer>tools>folder options>file types and select the type of file that your having the trouble with. Then click advanced>change icon, select the icon you wish to be displayed for the file type. You can also install a program than handles the type of file your having trouble with. eg. if the file type is .zip then installing a program that handles zip files will solve your problem.

Right-Click (File) > Properties.

Click on the Shortcut (tab) > Change Icon.

Go to Program Files > Whatever Program > and see if there are any files with the icon you want or with the .ico extension. Select it and see if that is the icon you want to use. Click OK.

The file containing the icon may be an exe file or in some other format. Search the file by the icon you want to use.

I don't have iTunes.

I do have Alcohol 120% however. Try using the alcohol.exe file for that shortcut.

<DriveName>:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\Alcohol.exe

that's the path you should go to for the icon if you haven't installed it elsewhere.

If this fails, try making a shortcut yourself. (right Click (desktop) > New > Shortcut)

What about the files that aren't exe's?

You should click on each file having the icon you want to use for that shortcut. If that file doesn't has an icon stored in it, it will give an error and open up the system32 folder for browsing. Go back to the program folder and trry clicking on the next file until you get the right one.

For the default windows icons use the following path:

%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
