problem with hp laptop

I installed XP on my roommate's HP N5470 laptop, and everything works well except shutting down. When trying to shut down or restart, the laptop gets stuck at Windows is Shutting Down and eventually gives a BSOD (blue screen of death) that appears so briefly I couldn't read what it said. Then the laptop would just reboot itself. This is an annoying problem, anybody have any insight? I'm thinking it's a power management incompatibility problem.

Could be, I'm not sure what the problem is.

In Win2k, under system properties (right click on my comp) you can go to a tab (forgot which one) that allows you to choose whether bluescreens should cause auto-reboots or not, and what kind of memory dump should occur. That might help you track down the file causing the blue screen. XP should have a similar option.

I was able to get it to not restart, now it just hangs at the blue screen, and now I see that the error is: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

you need to disable hibernate and standby in the power options. i just installed it yesterday, and well it crashes just like it did in win2k. my friends inspiron does the same thing
