Problem with Hotmail

My desktop machine is the machine I typically use to communicate with work and, as such, this problem puts me in a bind.

About 10 days ago I lost the ability to send email (15 yrs+ on Hotmail). I can receive with no problem, but when I send..... I constantly get the failure to deliver message.

Interesting point, to me, is that it seems to be this one machine. Whenever I send a message (and there is only one address that I regularly send to - work) I always "Bc" to myself. So, my Bc'd copy comes back to me without a hitch, but the intended recipient doesn't receive anything. I can then open the Bc'd message on another machine (WIN7 laptop, iPad) and forward it to the original intended recipient, and it goes through.

This would seem to indicate the problem is with the one desktop. I did a "System Restore" to a date two weeks ago (before the problem) but that did not help.

Now I am at a loss.

Any thoughts??

Not really an OS issue; moving to Computer Help

Do you have another email address you can use to further limit the cause of the issue (IE, do you have issues sending emails in Gmail, internet provider, etc)?

Are you using a web browser to send/receive or an email program (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc)?

If a browser, have you tried this on different ones (IE, Chrome, FF, etc)?

No, no other address.

But, at your suggestion, I tried using Outlook (Hotmail) while using Chrome as the browser, and it failed.

I then used Mozilla Thunderbird and it went through just fine. Didn't have any browser open at the time, so I assume it is a standalone email client.

Seems the problem is in Hotmail on this machine.

Thinking about a clean install of WIN7. Any thoughts?

Dave

Seems that the easiest solution (and I always like the easy way) is to just originate email using Thunderbird and use Hotmail to read it.

You should absolutely create a gmail address and BCC it; if your email goes through to the gmail client, then it's likely an issue with the recipient (spam filter or something)

Really don't think the problem is at the far end.

Like I said, this problem has been going on for about ten days. In that period I discovered I can do exactly what I want to do, but from a different machine, with no problems.

And, as just above, it goes through just fine from THIS machine if I use Thunderbird.

Sure - but things like the name you send as and the email headers are set by the email client (hence why thunderbird is working.)

Try deleting the email app and reinstalling, or deleting your account from the application and re-adding it.

OK, thanks for the quick reply.

First off, I am sure you have a lot of contacts with your email address, but I would still suggest you work on changing. Gmail is a great email program, and doesn't get the spam. I don't know how you stand it with Hotmail. I created a Hotmail account 3 years ago. Never use it for anything but an IM contact. I get nothing in that email address but junk, and things here and there from Microsoft. But I get crap every day. It's ridiculous. I have had my gmail account and you know how much junk I get? NONE!

As RampantAndroid suggested, you could use BCC for one address while you notify your contacts of the new address, until they get used to the idea.

Now, on to your current issue. I find it very interesting that Thunderbird works and the browser doesn't. That almost surely points to an incorrect setting/hindering app in your browser. You could do a complete reset or reinstall on your browser. Reinstalling Windows should fix the issue if you want to take it that far.

I suggested Gmail for reasons of testing, I do not advocate him changing email providers given I doubt the issue is with hotmail - the choice to dump hotmail is wholly the OPs decision and I won't tell him to change.

My suggestion is that he BCC an email address that isn't his own hotmail address and see if it works.

Yes, I grabbed your idea and attached it to a different purpose, so I gave credit. as it works in either case.

I will add that I will not tell the OP to do anything, but am highly suggesting he get rid of a spam magnet email provider.

I've had a working Hotmail account since Hotmail was first created in the late 90's. It's not my primary address but I use it regularly for things like message boards and online purchases. On a BAD day I get 2-3 spam messages.

If you don't sign up for crap, in most cases, you (generally) won't get crap in your Inbox

That's about what my Hotmail does (1 to 2 spams per day, according to the junk folder, when I check it), and I don't use it for anything (as in, signing up for crap).

Gmail on the other hand, is my primary email, and ZERO spam messages in 3 YEARS! Spam folder is empty.

OK - been a couple of days.

It seems to have decided to start working.

Never tried sending from a different email address.

Could always send from other devices using this email address.

Failure seemed to coincide with MS's announcement of "tweaking" the merger of HotMail and Outlook.

Also coincidental to my upgrade to latest Firefox (29?).

Don't know if either had anything to do with the problem, but all seems to be well now.

As an aside, I am like Fardringle - long time user of HotMail and get NO spam. Don't get anything I didn't invite by giving out my address. So, I shall continue with HotMail. Bit of a Luddite in that way.

Thanx to all.

So am I!! The work around was becoming burdensome and the intended recipient was getting testy with me calling for confirmations.

Thanx

The original problem had gone away, but has returned.

Additional info -

I have discovered that, when I use an older account on the same machine, I have no problems. Would seem to eliminate the machine as a cause.

I tried to send from my iPad, as I had done earlier, using the original account, but this time it fails, but with a bonus. When I get the "delivery failure" notice, attached to it is a notice from "spamcop.net" telling me my mail server is blocked for misbehaving.

I don't have my own mail server, so what now?
