problem with HDTV

This is not an issue with either the TV or the transmission. It is just that SDTV (non-HD) is transmitted with a 4:3 aspect ratio, while HDTV is transmitted with 16:9 aspect ratio. As your TV is 16:9 as well, the HDTV transmission takes up the whole screen, while the SDTV leaves black bars on the side.

If you do not want the black bars, your TV will have an option of stretching/zooming the image. Be aware that this causes some distortion of the image.
