Problem with HDTV

I got a Philips HDTV 30PW8420 and I can't get the TV to display a picture. I have a Motorola DT6412 Box from Comcast. First, I tried HDMI, with no luck. Now when I try using just the component hookups, I can't get any picture there. I have the cable from the wall jack going straight into the cable box. However, there's no 2nd connection on this box to connect the Cable Box to the Cable In on the TV. Any ideas?

Will it display a picture from another source?

I don't know how your cable company works, but when I picked up my Motorola DT6400 last week, I had to phone customer support and get them to activate the system over their network.

I get a picture when I connect the Cable Out from the Wall Jack straight into the TV. But I can't get Cable TV this way. There's no Out to TV connection on the back of the Cable Box, so the 75 ohm connection on the back of the TV has no cable to connect to. I don't know how to fix this.

What video channel are you using as the incoming line to the TV? On my Sony I have 6 line in connections, and the HDMI connection is Video 6, while the composite video is 3.

I did have exactly the same problem until I called Shaw Cable tech support and had them activate the DCT over the cable network, and made sure I was tuned to video input 6.

You dont really want to do it that way even if possible. You will lose ALL benifits of having an HDTV. In order to use HDTV correctly, you need to use the component or HDMI.

Are you getting absolutely NOTHING on your screen when turning on the cable box? Are you sure you have the tv inputs set to what it needs to be for a component or HDMI input? My guess is no, since you get a picture plugging coax directly in, and you aren't changing anything when trying to view your cable box. Even if your cable box isn't setup correctly with the cable company, you should still see SOMETHING come up on your screen.

I did not get anything at all on the screen until I had the cable company activate the cable box.

Odd. I do tech support for a cable company...not allowed to say what one...we support scientific atlanta boxes, and they show a scientific atlanta splash screen whether the box is setup or not

I agree, I thought it was very odd that it wouldn't at least re-assure the customer that it was communicating by showing a splash screen before it was activated.

Yep... had to activate the box, thanks guys 🙂

Glad it worked out for you. Now you can watch the baseball game tonite in HD splendor.

Yep.. I've already noticed a couple problems with the set though. There's horizontal lines going throughout the picture on SD. And when I turn on an HD channel, there's flickering throughout the picture (as if I'm watching something on a projector almost). Luckily I purchased a 2 yr. warranty, so I'll have to have them come out and take a look at it.

yeah, by default they aren't setup right for HD.

You wouldn't believe how many people have "HD cable" and they've been watching it in 480i for a year because the box is not setup on install to output HD.

I went to nice party recently and the dude was showing of how awesome HD is. I just politely said "that's not HD. You're cable company screwed up, would you mind if I showed you something?"

Went into the service menu and activated output for 1080i. Needless to say he was very happy.

I'm running 1080i right now and I'm having a lot of flickering (as stated above), is this normal? I know there's going to be flickering when running in interlaced mode, but this amount of flickering is highly annoying.

Is this a CRT? Do you see flicker in regular TVs?

Yes, it's a CRT. I haven't noticed any flickering in my previous TV, or the other TVs in our house. It's seriously like watching something from a projector.

I got the Comcast box and am running it on my 1080i HDTV but don't have any flickering issues, I'm using the Comcast box with Component and it looks great to me.

Well something is wrong then. Are you using actual component cables? The only thing I could think of is a sync problem.

If you're only seeing it on high contrast horizontal stuff like white on black I could understand...but not on the whole picture.
