Problem with HD?

I posted this on general hardware as well, but I don't want to ask strangers for help, so I'll post it here as well :).

My HD seems to be acting up. It's IBM 30Gb UDMA-100 drive. I'm not sure that is it one of those infamous drives which have the tendency to die.

Anyway, when I try to boot W2K, it goes as far as the boot-up logo, and then nothing. I can hear grinding noise (like during heavy HD activity) from the HD on even intervals. My first guess was that the HD died. But when I boot to Linux (located on separate HD), I can access that HD without any problems.

Is there something wrong with the HD, or is W2K screwed up?

if you are sure the grinding noise is coming from the hard drive, then the problem is most likely bad sectors on hard drive.
try to get a diagnostic programs (i.e. Scandisk /surface/all/nosave/autofix) and see how much bad sectors it will repair.

immediatly back up any important info before the whole thing goes up in smoke.

maybe there's something wrong with win2k. If you think it's the hard drive, then download one of those programs from IBM's website to check the drive

If it's a 75gxp and the hard drive is bad, odds aren't good. I'd say download the diag program like Bigrash9 says and if it's bad get your rma.
Make sure they send you a 60gxp or better in replacement...

If it's win2k, try booting into safe mode. If you can get into safe mode try uninstalling the last few things you installed.

Well, I scanned the HD, and it did find bad sectors. To fix it, I need to erase the HD. I am PISSED right about now :|!! Well, I CAN make backups of all the files I need. I'll just burn them to CDR's in Linux, move them to my Samba-server (got it online just today) or move them to my Linux HD. But still! It's a pain in the ass to do that and to re-install everything!

Maybe I should do a low-level format while I'm at it.
