Problem with hard drive installation in a lian-li case

I got a bunch of parts delivered today for the new computer I'm building. One of these was the great Lian-Li PC60+USB aluminum case. A while back when I read the review of the case I had no idea that the case that I ordered would in fact come with a rack on the bottom that would hold 4 or 5 hard drives, but they all have to be mounted sideways. This is different from the case that I saw in a review. Unfortunately, no hdd can go in the second rack (where the floppy is) unless I take a slot cover off. Is it safe to mount a hdd sideways on that bottom rack?

You can mount them sideways, and they will work.

I have head rumors that this can shorten the life of a hard-drive, so I make it a personal peeve to ALWAYS mount them the corect way. I may be wrong, but it just feels better to know the hard drive disk is spinning parallel to the ground.

Yea, I thought so too. Then why would the case come like this? It seems that there is NO other way to mount it except sideways. It seems like a mounting kit would be useless too because there are big circular holes on one side of the bottom rack and the other side is just flat with no holes at all.....

Any suggestions?

Get an Antec ;) ;)

Where there is a will, there is a way. I am not sure what you are describing, but does the drive cage let you rotate it 90 degrees? Some do, which would solve your problem. if not, I bet you can do a little work with a dremel and make it so it fits better. Without seeing it I cant tell you more, but I KNOW it can be done ;)

a lot of gateways and dells come with thier HDD's mounted sideways. im not to sure on t he exact specifics of the shortened life issue, but it must be ok if all of these oems are doing it. i would think anyway :)

OLD OEM's did. new dells, gateways and compaqs mount them normal (flat).

However, I get a lot of old computers in for repair, including OEMs. I have seen 2 computers, where there was 1 HD horiz. and 1 HD verticle. And on these computers, the one that was vert. was dead, and the horiz. one worked.

I am basing my assumption on two computers, but I just know I like my HD's Horiz, and EVERY computer I build I put that way. I may be wrong, but better safe than sorry.

Loosbrew is correct. My Dell PIII550 has it's HD mounted parallel with the front panel of the case, sticking straight up. It runs fine.
