Problem with GF3 Ti500 + SB Live solved!

Just to let anyone else who has gotten or will get a new GF3 TI 500 video card, I solved my problem finally.

The videocard worked just fine unless I put in my SB Live sound card. Then it'd really hose the system up. After 12 days of fooling with the system, I had resigned myself to returning the video card and trying another. Then I saw some conversations about how the SB Live has alot of problems with some Via chipsets. I previously had gotten the 4.31 Via 4 in 1 drivers update and had my problems with game lockups go away. Now they were back and in force with the new vid card.

I took out the SB Live, and tried a new Phillips Seismic Edge sound card ($49.95 from Staples), and guess what? NO problems. Had some initial install glitches, but they cleared up fairly easily, and I can now actually use my new GF3. I like it now. 🙂

Creative, you all can kiss my A**!

I guarantee the problem was NOT due to any "incompatibility" between these two devices. It is either a driver issue or a conflict issue, and it would be easy to solve if done right...

It could be that that SB live is defective, but as far as its working in a system with a GF3 Ti is concerned, there are no problems.

You're right in that the SB Live isn't defective per se. It has worked FINE in my system with the older Prophet-II GTS after I got the 4.31 VIA 4 in 1 drivers patch. Had zero problems with it after that. It worked fine until the new GF3 Ti500 was installed.

I've seen some mention of a problem with one of the new NVIDIA driver files with the GF3 TI series, and maybe that's the problem. BUT, who do we talk to? NVIDIA won't even talk to customers, and I got nowhere with the vid card maker (Visiontek).

I don't know what else I could have done. I tried every version of VIA patch, several NVIDIA Detonator XP driver sets (2183 and 2188 -2185 came with the vid card), did a complete OS wipe and reinstalled everything one item at a time. There were no IRQ conflicts.

Maybe a real computer professional could have figured out what was wrong faster than I did, but there aren't any of those around here that charge reasonable rates. $50+ an hour.

Problem not solved after all. It was fine for a couple hours until I played a game. Mechwarrior 4 to be exact.

After that, I could not under any circumstances, get the system to boot normally. I could get Safe mode, but that's useless. Had to reinstall my old Prophet-II to even get the system to boot. Works for now.

NVIDIA, your drivers stink. It's got to be that. Either that, or someone has sent the Gremlins after me.

I have installed the older 2181 drivers for the original GF3, and I PRAY that they'll work. NVIDIA better get their crap together soon, or I swear, I'll buy a Radeon. 🙂
