Problem with Geforce Fx 5600 ultra & xp

I am running an MSI geforce fx 5600 ultra with an msi 655max mobo 2.6ghz p4 with 1gig of dual channel ddr 400. my problem is when i install the drivers for the video card and reboot. i end up having to boot into last best known configuration. to roll back the drivers to windows standard vga drivers. though i can run at 1280 x 864 fine but when i try to run games such as halo it gives me an error about hardware rendering failed. also i am running windows xp pro and when i go to do windows updates it gives an error that says that windows update has encountered and error and gives me the error number (0x800a138f)
