problem with game controllers

My game controllers works for a while and then it quits. Then I have to reboot to get them to work again, but again it quits working after 2 - 10 minutes. This happens in both Windows 98 SE and Windows 2000. It happens to both gameport and usb controllers.
I have a FIC VA-503+ board, with the VIA Apollo MVP3 Chipset. I use a k6-2 500mhz cpu. I'm thinking the problem is the motherboard or settings in the BIOS. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
