Hi, I was just barely looking for a forum to post my problem in and everyone here seems to have a lot of experince with hardware so here is my problem. I have an NEC computer, it has an AMD K6-2 450mhz proccesor, 256mb of sdram, a 13gb hard drive, LAN, Modem, and an onboard 8mb of video. The problem is with my video. I put a new video card in my computer (it is a Diamond Stealth 3 s540 with 32mb of memory.) It is a PCI video card because my computer does not have an AGP slot. I installed the card in one of my PCI slots and then turned my computer on. As it booted up I went into the BIOS and changed the configuration of the video to run through the PCI instead of my normal onboard one. Then it finished booting up. I installed all the drivers and then went into my system configuration in the control panel and disabled the onboard video and my card seemed to work fine. Then i began to play a game I had on there previously called Half life: CounterStrike . It worked for about 10min then just completley froze, nothing would respond so i restarted my comp. It kept doing it at random times between about 1min - 30min time. So i decided to try some other 3d games. I then loaded on Motocross madness 1. I can play that game fine and it has good fps and good graphics also. Then i loaded on Motocross madness 2 and played it for about the same amount of time as counterstrike, and it froze up too. I know that all three games use direct 3d, but what confused me was that motocross madness 1 didnt freeze up ever and it still doesnt. There! Confusing enough? Well if you have any suggestions or help to give me i would be very thankful.

Thanks,
Joe

Install an updated version of DirectX. Update your motherboards bios and AGP drivers. Download the latest video card drivers and if necessary reload the games that are causing problems. After all this activity I would suggest using a version of Nortons to run WinDoctor.

:eek: A K6-2 450 would still benefit greatly from GF2MX, GF4MX420 or Rad7500 all of which are much faster and stable than a Diamond Stealth 3 s540.

:) Anyway. My first guess would be that it is a heat problem, are you o/c'ing anything? My next guess would be your PSU, is it powerful enough to supply the the gfx card? Have you tried a few other PCI slots, esp the top PCI slot, you may need a Bus Mastering slot IIRC.

:) Another possibility that you are having probs with old driver remnants from your old onboard video card. Did you uninstall all drivers and sw for the onboard gfx? You want the latest official drivers for all your hw, particularly you gfx card and mobo, be sure to check both chipset and manu websites, esp for compatability info. After installing the latest drivers also install the latest official version of DX (8.1?).

;) Consider either getting a GF or Radeon in PCI flavour OR just upgrade to a Duron1ghz and SktA mobo, it can cost from as little as $90 and will boost your PC no ends, also opening up faster CPUs and gfx card options. Just a thought.

Im casting another vote for a CPU/MOBO/GFX upgrade along with the software downloads suggested above.

AMD Sub-1GHZ CPU/MOBO= $90+

GF2= $50

Afterwards...
