Problem with flickering

This is so specific to the graphics system, this forum seems a good place to ask this over the general tech support, but if it belongs there let me know and I'll move it.

A couple days ago my fine-working system had an ad come up for a 'new' ATI driver manager, which had a new driver to install.

Usually cautious, I said 'what the heck, if it doesn't work well I'll do a checpoint restore'.

Since then, here's the problem. I didn't have flicker before. But now there's a lot.

Now on web pages as they load there's a lot of flicker of things while they load.

A good example is on anandtech. Most of the screen is fine. But in the 'text box', like the one I'm typing in now, there's a ton of redraw flicker.

If I try to higlight the text in a post I'm drafting, the whole box keeps flashing between text and black backgorund fast many times.

As I type this, every few charaters typed the line I'm typing on flashes black.

It's a strange problem.

Are there any comments, before I restore to the checkpoint?

One note, I leave my systme on for days/months, and sometimes graphics starts to get a bit weird like this after a while.

Of course I can reboot to try this too, but thought I'd ask this trying to confirm the cause while I can still test anything.

HD 4870 1GB, Win 7 Premium 64-bit.

Have you tried rebooting? I've seen that when installing an updated driver without rebooting.

Go into safe mode and see if it flickers. If not, then reinstall the driver by completely remove the current one.

Don't click ads.

try uninstalling and running driver sweeper and reinstalling the hotfix driver or the 10.10.

So you clicked a "ad" and installed "something" on your pc, and now you have flickering?

Time to run a virus scan my friend.

Are you running any utilities that force v-sync? D3D Overrider played very bad with the new Windows Live Essentials 2011 for me. There was a lot of weird stuff going on and I could hear the blip of D3DO forcing the setting every time I started Messenger or Photo Gallery. I added exceptions to their starting .exe files and problem solved.
